The Mankulam MHEP was started as a stand alone project to cater to the electricity needs of the remote village. Local governing body, Mankulam Panchayat, owned the generating station and the distribution network. Later, State Utility grid was made available but the generation unit was not put in operation owing to the technical hindrances to synchronize to the grid. Revamping of the project was done with new technology utilizing the existing infrastructure at a small budget. It utilizes the water of beautiful Nakshtrakuthu water fall in Mankulam. The project was completed in IPP model in 2013 and was inaugurated by the then Minister of Power, Kerala state. The project operates two impulse turbines and has two generators of 55 kW.
